Notes from the Fray
A few quick jottings on the run, most rather rantish...
1. I was reading somewhere the other day about how all those "storage solutions" - little shelf units, and hanging bags, and goodness knows what - do wonders to make it look as if you really don't have Too Much Stuff.
Codswallop. They merely turn it from the Too Much General Stuff Problem into the Too Damned Many Storage Units problem. (This mutates within the week into the And Now You Have Stuff Piled On The Storage Units, Too Problem, but that's a secondary effect.)
2. Could someone smack the writers of such things upside the head and tell them that some of us would like a firewall in the range between ZoneAlarm Pro (don't try running this on W2K Advanced Server/Domain Controller/Exchange instance/SQL Server instance, OK? Just don't.) and Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server (Wonderful stuff. Solves all my firewalling/NAT problems. Pity it costs £1,221 at the cheapest place I can find to get it.) All I want is incoming IP filtering on one (count 'em, one) interface. Is that too much to ask?
Rhetorical, but the answer is yes, absolutely.
3. Does it happen to other people that when you miss deliveries in the wee small hours of the morning (meaning eight o'clock here), and arrange carefully to be awake from pre-sparrowfart the next day to receive it, they don't turn up until half-two in the afternoon? Or am I just coincidence's bitch?
4. Bleh. Old ATI video adapter does not like new ATI video adapter. Cannot have two monitors any more. This sucks mightily...
...well, actually, it doesn't suck nearly as mightily as it might, as the shiny new monitor can finally manage 1600x1200x32, with which I can live quite content. Fitting two maximised apps onto the one screen, sort of thing. And at least this way I don't have to worry about where I can fit the printer.
I'm having to work at being unhappy about 4, can you tell?
To prevent this entry from being entirely down, I should perhaps mention how happy I am to *have* said shiny new machine, monitor included, that irrespective of the issues in storing it all the Stuff in question is Shiny Goodness broken only by occasional Matt Goodness, and that the firewall issue is only now seriously pressing because I've finally bit the bullet and ordered ADSL.
But why spoil a perfect track record as The One Whose Glass Is Always Half Empty, And Smeared With Butter From The Inappropriately Landing Toast, Too?
Now back to clearing the boxes, spare parts, and polystyrene-chippings-that-get-everywhere before I have any visitors...

New hardware…(drool)….
I have a new computer on the way, theoretically. Pretty bottom-of-the-line, but at least I won’t have to walk two blocks to check my e-mail anymore.
RYN (Obligations): Yeah, but I was trying to wean myself away from such things. I resent owing my soul to a drug. (Note the “was”—we have a test tomorrow.)
I’ve got the ANYHSPOTSUT Problem. Is there any cure?
